World Affairs Council: Distinguished Speaker Series featuring Anne Korin

On May 17, 2012 Katarina Bezakova attended the event organized by the World Affairs Council

Distinguished Speakers Series presenting Anne Korin, Co-Director of the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security.  She is an adviser to the United States Energy Security Council and chairs the Set America Free Coalition, a strange bedfellow alliance promoting ways to reduce America’s the strategic importance of oil. Korin also chairs the Mobility Choice for a Secure America Coalition, an alliance promoting fiscally responsible, free market oriented approach to expanding competition among transportation modes. She appears in the media frequently and has written articles for Foreign Affairs, The American Interest, The National Review, The Wall Street Journal, Commentary Magazine, and the Journal of International Security Affairs. She is co-author of Energy Security Challenges for the 21st Century (2009) and Turning Oil into Salt: Energy Independence through Fuel Choice (2009.)

A reception was followed by a dinner and the presentation by Anne Korin called “Turning Oil into Salt: How to reduce the strategic importance of oil and why it must be done.” The focus of her speech was the following:

As The Middle East rumbles, Iran continues its march toward nuclearization, and billions rise out of poverty in China and India, what are the implications of oil’s status as a strategic commodity to geopolitics and the prospects for economic recovery? What can we do to reduce the strategic importance of oil and how will action or inaction affect the U.S. and foreign economies?
