Play-In for Climate Change
Washington, DC
July 9, 2014
Moms Clean Air Force first-ever National Play-In for Action on Climate was a huge success!
Over 200 people turned out for a morning for the family-friendly protest from states around the country: California, Michigan, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Illinois, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Utah, the District of Columbia and Massachusetts
Senators Boxer and Whitehouse addressed the group, as did Katie Huffling from Alliance of Nurses for a Healthy Environment; Heather Clark, Biome Studios; North Carolina mom and attorney Danielle Hilton; Keya Chatterjee, WWF & author of The Zero Footprint Baby. Gretchen Dahlkemper-Alfonso led the press conference and march to the US Capitol.
The march from the Senate grounds to the US Capitol stretched over two blocks and was full of children with signs, chanting, and cheering!
The activities—parachute play, poster painting, kid-size protest signs—were highly visual, and got lots of media attention. Our media coverage included Chicago Tribune, LA Times, Christian Broadcast Network, Miami Herald, Charlotte Observer, and coverage from bloggers.
Notable quotes: “I believe that God has gifted us to be stewards of the planet,” she said. “And it’s our responsibility – a sacred duty – to protect what God’s created.” – Linda Hutchins-Knowles, California mom
Whitehouse: “We have some very big polluters who are polluting our planet,” Whitehouse said. “We have those same polluters who are polluting our democracy with a lot of money and a lot of influence. And up against those big polluters, we have the Moms Clean Air Force. And I want to tell you that my money is on the moms.”
Boxer: “If you can’t breathe, you can’t go to school. And if you can’t breathe, you can’t go to work,” she said. “So if we ignore pollution from carbon we are walking right into a death trap.”
Kid’s chanting: “Polluters get richer as we get sicker”
“What do we want? Clean Air! When do we want it? Now!”
“The Children, United, Will Never Be Defeated”
